Why our grafted Grevillea are better
Grevillea is a large genus of mainly Australian Native plants consisting of hundreds of species from ground covers to large trees, varied flower types and colors. With variations in leaf shape and growth habits, it’s hard to imagine they could all be related.
They all have one trait in common though - a very weak, touchy root system, intolerant of phosphorous, an element found in all general fertilizers. They all succumb to the soil pathogen Phytopthora, prevalent throughout California.
All Grevillea have this weakness, with one exception: the aptly Named Grevillea Robusta, a vigorous tree that thrives throughout the state. Its roots system is immune to the soil issues that would be fatal to all other Grevillea.
Leeward Growers uniquely propagates the beautiful flowering Grevillea species and hybrids by grafting them onto Grevillea Robusta. Using Robusta as the root system enables the much desired varieties to not just survive but thrive in virtually any California landscape.
Grevillea Robusta roots provide many benefits, perform well in both dry, fast draining soils as well as hard clay soils. The ability to tolerate balanced fertilizers produces a stronger, faster growing plant with brighter colors to both foliage and flowers.
